For over 30 years, Protea Foods has been supplying South African expats and Australian converts with delicious biltong products. What started as humble beginnings in a small delicatessen in Church Street, Brighton in Victoria, Protea Foods has now become Australia’s premier and leading supplier of biltong and boerewors.

History

Longing for the taste of biltong, South African expats, Richard and Sue Foy, decided to make biltong to fulfil their desire for this traditional South African snack. For years they had made biltong in their butcher in Johannesburg but in Australia, the number of South Africans craving the taste of biltong was rare—well that is what they thought.

After displaying some biltong in their delicatessen in Brighton, South African passers-by would recognise the unique shape of the air-dried sticks of beef in the window. Soon the word spread and every weekend hundreds of South African’s would descend to their store from all over Victoria, some from interstate, to fulfil their cravings for biltong. And so it began.

Today, the still family-run Protea Foods continue to provide South African and Australians with the best tasting biltong and boerewors to satisfy the nation’s palette.

At Protea Foods, we are committed in providing top level service and satisfaction to all our customers. All our products are made from 100% Australian premium beef manufactured under strict hygiene and quality control procedures. Our purposely built factory is HACCP food safety system approved ensuring that only the best quality products are produced for your consumption.

Unlike new biltong and jerky brands on the market, we make and produce our own biltong. Some brands have third parties make their product and then stick their own label on it. At Protea Foods, we take pride in our biltong and are involved in the whole manufacturing process. We care about the quality of our product.
